One light language across the hall, dozens of vendor stalls and the fresh counters: spun RLM pendants, wet-listed stall fixtures and sign lights, configured and built to order.
Good food hall lighting gives a big, noisy room one consistent light language: a landlord family of large pendants hung in a steady rhythm across the hall, a shared fixture standard at every vendor stall, and high-color-rendering light wherever food is on display. Tenants bring their own names and colors. The landlord owns the ceiling, the color temperature and the mounting line, so fifty stalls read as one market.
Stand at the edge of a public market at noon on a Saturday. Light falls from the clerestory onto steel trusses, a row of wide domes hangs over the long tables, and under each stall sign a pair of angled shades picks out the menu board, the oyster ice and the stacked sourdough. Nobody sees a lighting plan, just a place that feels cared for.
That look is repeatable. Bock, headquartered in Twinsburg, Ohio, configures and builds spun-aluminum pendants like the Beretto, up to 60 inches across, and the Step Neck Dome to order. It also builds wet-listed stall fixtures and gooseneck sign lights in the same powder-coat colors, so the hall and every stall can share one family.
Large-scale pendants for the hall, a stall standard vendors can order by the unit, wet-listed fixtures for fish and produce, and sign lights for every storefront.

A food hall is many rooms inside one room, each with its own rule.
### The big room
Most halls sit in old warehouses, train sheds or market buildings with 25- to 40-foot ceilings. Drop the hall pendants to a common line, typically 12 to 16 feet above the floor, so the room gets a human-scale ceiling of light. Scale the shade to the volume. A 30- to 48-inch Beretto reads correctly from across a hall where a 14-inch shade disappears. Hang them on the structural bay grid.
### Vendor stalls
This is where public market lighting succeeds or fails. The landlord should fix the stall-front fixture, its mounting height, its finish and its CCT in the tenant criteria. The tenant chooses what happens behind the counter. A Step Neck Dome or the slotted Cylinder Light works well as a stall standard. The UL wet-listed Cylinder Light takes custom slots and any standard powder-coat color, so a vendor's brand color fits a shared shape.
### Signs and menu boards
Light each stall sign from above with an angled RLM on a gooseneck. The Step Neck Angle (8 to 14 inches, cULus wet-location listed) lights a menu board without glare. Plan about one shade per 3 to 4 feet of sign.
### Communal seating
Keep the tables slightly dimmer and warmer than the counters, so guests are drawn toward the food. Use wide pendants over long tables and 2700K to 3000K sources.
### Fish, produce and washdown
Where stalls mist produce, shave ice or hose down floors, specify wet-listed fixtures: the Downlight Reflector with a jelly-jar lens and guard, or the VP vaportight pendant with its die-cast aluminum body and silicone gaskets.
### Circulation, entries and exterior
Keep aisles evenly lit, typically 20 to 40 footcandles, with brighter entries. Outside, carry the hall finish onto the facade with wet-listed Emblem Sign or Step Neck Angle shades over the market's name.

Many hands touch a market, but the shopper should see one store.
### Grocery store lighting, department by department
Market-hall grocers and specialty food stores are lit like food halls: open ceilings, RLM rows, and light brought down close to the product. Hold 90 CRI or better wherever fresh food is on display, and let color temperature follow the department:
- Bakery, deli, cheese and wine: 2700K to 3000K.
- Meat counters: about 3000K, so reds read true.
- Produce: 3000K to 3500K.
- Seafood on ice: cooler, 4000K or more, is common.
At a Whole Foods in Dayton, Ohio, Bock's PLU and Downlight Reflector light the sales floor.
### Write the stall standard into the lease
A food hall's tenant criteria should give each vendor a one-page lighting sheet with:
- the fixture, shade size and mounting (cord, stem or gooseneck)
- the drop height, finish code, CCT and lumen setting
- the sign-light spacing
Vendors order by the unit to that sheet, and Bock builds every fixture to the recorded configuration. Stall 40 then matches stall 1, even two years later. The Adjustable LED Lumens & Kelvin module lets an installer set CCT and output on site. Record the switch settings in the tenant sheet too.
### Maintenance at height
Every relamp at height needs a lift, so choose long-life LED, keep a spare fixture per finish, and add guards where carts and crates pass.
Put the lighting in the tenant criteria. The landlord picks one stall-front fixture and fixes its shade size, mounting height, finish, color temperature and lumen setting, and each vendor orders to that one-page sheet. Tenants can show their brand through a shade color from an approved palette, or behind the counter, while the line of light at the stall front stays the same across the hall.
Send us the section and the tenant plan. A Bock rep will help you set the hall fixture, the stall standard and a spec package vendors can order from.
