Every outdoor sign lighting layout comes down to four numbers. Get them right and the sign reads evenly, with no scallops between fixtures.

1. Arm reach follows sign height

The arm must hold the shade far enough out that light reaches the bottom of the sign. Start with a projection of one-third to one-half the sign height. A 3 ft sign band wants an 18 to 24 in arm; a 6 ft painted panel wants 30 to 36 in. The Gooseneck Top arm is 3/4 in schedule 40 aluminum tubing and can be cut down in the field. The J Style Gooseneck comes at 25 in and can be built from 10 to 40 in.

2. Shade diameter follows sign size

Bigger signs need bigger shades. Use 8 to 10 in for narrow fascia bands, 12 to 14 in for most wall signs, and the 18 or 22 in Emblem Sign for tall painted walls.

3. Fixture count follows sign width

Space fixtures 3 to 4 ft apart (up to 5 ft on long arms), with the end fixtures in by half a space. Count = sign width ÷ spacing, rounded up.

4. Mounting height and aiming

Mount the shade 12 to 24 in above the sign's top edge. Aim the brightest part of the beam about two-thirds of the way down; the top picks up spill.

Worked example

A sign 20 ft wide and 3 ft tall: 12 in Emblem Sign shades on 18 to 24 in arms, five fixtures on 4 ft centers, the end fixtures 2 ft in from each edge, mounted about 18 in above the sign. Use 1,850 to 2,400 lumens at 3000K each.

LED lumens and color temperature

The adjustable LED module sets output and CCT on the fixture: 1,500 to 2,750 lumens (23W, 12 in shades and up) or 3,000 to 5,250 lumens (43W, 16 in and up). Use 2700K–3000K for brick, wood and paint; 3500K–4000K for cool whites and blues. Choose 90 CRI for brand colors.

Some of the best signs in town were never meant to glow: a hand-lettered brewery logo on brick, a ghost sign that has outlasted three owners, a stone monument at the edge of a lawn.

How to light a painted wall sign

Painted signs need reach. At Southwest Oklahoma Brewing, two large Emblem Sign shades hang above a painted logo more than a story tall. Use the largest shade the wall can carry, long arms, and warm 2700K to 3000K light. Too tall for one row? Add a second, or a WMAF wall flood for the bottom half.

Ghost signs and murals

Old paint is uneven, so aim for a soft, even wash: closer spacing, shades kept high, warm high-CRI light so faded colors don't turn gray. Historic districts often want a period-correct fixture, which a gooseneck with an angle shade is. A custom gooseneck can clear cornices and corbels.

Monument sign lighting

Many sign codes now ask for top-down, shielded light instead of ground floods. A gooseneck on a post beside or behind the monument lights it from above, sized like a wall sign. Where uplight is allowed, an FLMA1 flood at the base is simpler.

A few choices decide how the fixtures age.

• Wet-location listing. Emblem Sign and Step Neck Angle shades are cULus wet-location listed.
• Finish. Match shade and arm to the sign. Bock powder coats in standard and custom colors. Near the coast or road salt, consider the galvanized Step Neck Angle.
• Arm strength. Long arms catch wind. Arms are 3/4 in schedule 40 aluminum, with galvanized steel available on J Style and Side arms.
• Dark-sky rules. Many towns require signs lit from above, aimed down and shielded, which is how a top-mounted gooseneck works. Check local CCT and lumen limits; we can send IES files for plan review.
• Buy American requirements. Add BAA or BABA to the Emblem Sign or Step Neck Angle part number when the job requires it.
• Dimming and controls. The adjustable LED modules dim 0–10V down to 10% and run on 120–277V, so a sign can dim after close.
