About the Lighting Calculator

The Bock Lighting Calculator is a free online tool suite for lighting professionals, architects, designers, electricians, and facility managers. It includes five calculators covering the most common lighting unit conversions and calculations needed for lighting design and retrofit projects.

Lumens to Watts Conversion

Convert between lumens (brightness) and watts (power consumption) for LED, CFL, incandescent, and halogen bulbs. LED bulbs produce approximately 90 lumens per watt, making them 6 times more efficient than incandescent bulbs at 15 lumens per watt. A 60-watt incandescent bulb producing 800 lumens can be replaced by a 9-watt LED.

Lux to Lumens Calculator

Calculate the total lumens needed for a room based on the desired lux (illuminance) level and room area. The formula is: Lumens = Lux × Area (m²). This calculator supports both square feet and square meters and includes IES recommended light levels for over 35 room types across commercial, industrial, residential, outdoor, and healthcare categories.

Beam Angle Calculator

Calculate the beam diameter and coverage area for any light fixture given its beam angle and throw distance (mounting height). The formula is: Diameter = 2 × Distance × tan(Beam Angle / 2). Common beam angles include: 10° (very narrow spot), 15° (spot), 25° (narrow flood), 40° (flood), 60° (wide flood), 90° (very wide flood), and 120° (wash). The calculator includes an interactive SVG cone diagram showing the light spread pattern.

LED Equivalent Finder

Find the recommended LED replacement wattage for any existing bulb type including incandescent, halogen, CFL, metal halide, high pressure sodium (HPS), and mercury vapor. The calculator shows the LED wattage range needed to produce equivalent brightness, estimated annual energy savings in kWh and dollars, and the percentage reduction in energy consumption. LED replacements typically save 70-85% energy compared to incandescent bulbs and 60-75% compared to HID fixtures.

Foot-candles to Lux Converter

Convert between foot-candles and lux, the two most common illuminance units. One foot-candle equals 10.764 lux. Foot-candles (lumens per square foot) are the standard unit in North America, while lux (lumens per square meter) is used internationally. The converter includes a comprehensive reference table of IES recommended foot-candle and lux levels for over 35 application types.
